She notes that the limited series \u201fis the product of a marriage between two eminent tastemakers, A24 and HBO,\u201d booked three years ago (pre-Discovery&#8217;s acquisition of the latter and industry contractions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tolentino writes that Park&#8217;s \u201fgift for sumptuous spectacle [is] underpinned by meticulous preparation,&#8221; from detailed storyboarding and on-set precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Behind the Scenes of &quot;The Hamlet&quot; | The Sympathizer | HBO\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/upPYWsY9yNg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Production required 120 days, and time on set with Park is \u201fnotoriously calm\u201d and often marked by days that wrap early, per production designer Alec Hammond. However, this resulted in an economy of coverage. \u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of latitude in the edit, which is not usual for television executives to see,\u201d Don McKellar, Park&#8217;s co-showrunner for <em>The Sympathizer<\/em>, told Tolentino. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, Tolentino observes, \u201fMaking television is a more bureaucratic process than filmmaking, involving more input from more people on more footage.\u201d (Perhaps Park&#8217;s infamous precision is one way to combat this tendency?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For his part, Park \u201frecognizes different constraints and opportunities,\u201d Tolentino writes. However, he told her that &#8220;you can waste your time &#8216;like a millionaire wasting their abundant fortune&#8217;\u201d when crafting a TV series. Instead, he aimed <br>\u201fnot to waste &#8216;one second, one minute, or even a frame.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, Tolentino questions whether Park is perfectly suited to the small screen. She writes, \u201fTelevision, though, may never be quite the right medium for a filmmaker who casts a spell that\u2019s not meant to be broken, and who rewards the viewer through destabilization and discomfort.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2024\/04\/15\/park-chan-wook-profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">With \u201cThe Sympathizer,\u201d the director of \u201cOldboy\u201d and \u201cThe Handmaiden\u201d comes to American television (The New Yorker)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI tried very hard to make his colorful writing into a visual form,\u201d Park told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/04\/22\/sympathizer-park-chan-wook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Salon<\/em> senior critic Melanie McFarland<\/a> during a Zoom interview, explaining his approach for the adaptation of Nguyen&#8217;s 2015 novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, Park \u201ftakes certain liberties with the story that invite new interpretations and meanings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For her part, McFarland wonders \u201fwhether parts of Nguyen\u2019s story provided [Park with] a means of commenting on the audience\u2019s tendency to revere certain filmmakers and excuse&nbsp;their excesses\u201d (hallmarked by the portrayal of The Auteur); or is the series considering the work of a critic (one of Park&#8217;s prior careers)? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Park told her: \u201fThere&#8217;s&nbsp;some part of me&nbsp;that&nbsp;is very interested in that idea, and perhaps it has to do with my background as a critic&nbsp;too. But what is important for me whenever I&nbsp;go about making&nbsp;any kind of work is preserving the right amount of distance with the subject matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says that he seeks \u201fto have the viewer be engaged in the story and alight with the protagonist and his emotional state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3
