Shapiro doesn\u2019t mince words when describing the influence these companies have. \u201cThese massive big tech Death Stars and the disproportionate gravity that they have in the ecosystem&#8230; enables them to invade the markets of the traditional players in these segments, and take share mindshare revenue share attention share away from the traditional players.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this new ecosystem, consumers are not short on choices. When they pick up their devices, they\u2019re greeted with a plethora of options. \u201cNow we\u2019re in a period or an era where the consumer curates their own media bundle on their phones,\u201d Shapiro says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Media companies can no longer afford to look at their services in isolation. \u201cWhen you look at where your life\u2019s blood of audience and revenues are coming from, you have to look at these things all in concert of each other. You cannot take them as individual pegs inside a larger ecosystem, you have to see the connectedness now,\u201d he advises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re still waiting for the user-centric era, you\u2019re behind the curve. \u201cWe\u2019re not approaching it. It\u2019s not coming. It\u2019s not on its way. It\u2019s here and it\u2019s been here for some time,\u201d Shapiro emphasizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Shapiro sees it, traditional media companies may soon find themselves part of a larger lifestyle bundle. \u201cThat is a big part of the mandate, old-school big media that we\u2019ve known for the last 50 years will be subsumed and become part of larger enterprises that are offering a lifestyle bundle of services that include things like free delivery, or streaming music, or books or gaming, or software, more cloud service,\u201d he predicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case Study: <em>The New York Times<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shapiro points to <em>The New York Times<\/em> as a prime example of how media companies can not only adapt but thrive in the new user-centric era of media. The <em>NYT<\/em>\u2019s journey offers valuable insights for any media enterprise looking to navigate today\u2019s complex landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The New York Times<\/em> doesn\u2019t have 200 million subscribers, yet it\u2019s thriving because it\u2019s super-serving a highly engaged, valuable set of consumers. \u201cIt sounds simple, and yet, almost no one\u2019s doing it,\u201d Shapiro notes. He adds, \u201cScale for scale\u2019s sake is not the quest here, super-serving a very highly engaged, valuable set of consumers across a set of revenue inputs and outputs \u2014 that\u2019s the assignment now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 2010s, <em>The New York Times<\/em> found itself in a precarious position. \u201c<em>The New York Times<\/em> was in a nosedive,\u201d Shapiro recalls. The media giant seemed on the brink of either dissolution or absorption by a larger enterprise. The<em> Times<\/em> took a bold step by bringing in fresh leadership from outside the American media ecosystem. \u201cThey hired the head of the BBC, Mark Thompson, someone who had never run a commercial enterprise before,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson\u2019s arrival marked a sea change for the organization. \u201cHe took money out of the print newsroom and put it into the digital newsroom,\u201d says Shapiro. The shift from a print and advertising-centric model to a digital subscription focus was radical but necessary. The strategic pivot paid off handsomely. \u201cIn 2022, where the rest of digital media was suffering, <em>The New York Times<\/em> had a surge not just in subscribers, but also in revenues and profits,\u201d Shapiro highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em> also shook up its internal structure. \u201cThey hired a bunch of young, late 20s, early 30s product managers and thought leaders and empowered them to make changes at the enterprise,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em> has expanded far beyond traditional news. \u201cThey have one of the most important podcasts in the world. They make television for FX and are a very important gaming company,\u201d Shapiro points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these changes, the <em>Times<\/em> has stayed true to its core mission. \u201cTheir mission to educate and inform the world remains intact. They did not sell their souls in order to succeed,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This case study serves as a blueprint for other media companies. \u201cThe opportunity is to find new ways to get [these services] in the hands of today\u2019s consumers,\u201d he advises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Road Ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we navigate the complexities of the new media ecosystem, Shapiro leaves us with some actionable insights and a sense of optimism for what lies ahead. He emphasizes the importance of recruiting \u2014 and listening \u2014 to the younger generation within your enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cListen to people who perhaps haven\u2019t always been there, who might have better ideas on what\u2019s actually coming because they\u2019re the consumers you\u2019re looking to serve,\u201d he advises. In other words, the Gen Z and Gen Y employees within your organization aren\u2019t just staff; they\u2019re also the consumer base you\u2019re trying to reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The media landscape is evolving, and so should your business model. Shapiro encourages media companies to think outside the box: \u201cThink about new ways to generate revenues to keep consumers satisfied, that aren\u2019t necessarily your traditional business model.\u201d This could mean diversifying revenue streams or rethinking your content strategy to better serve your audience\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more than a moment; it\u2019s a movement. The user-centric era is here to stay, and the time for action is now. Don\u2019t get left behind \u2014 embrace the future today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the challenges ahead, Shapiro sees a bright future for the industry. \u201cWe can get back to growth, we can get back to relevancy, we can get back to opportunity inside the media ecosystem,\u201d he says.
