With that need comes more urgency regarding the development of interoperable multi-cloud tools across the production chain. And to achieve that goal, many experts believe the only logical path to travel is one involving a significant evolution of remote workflow concepts. To that end, the pursuit of what is increasingly being referred to as \u2018software-defined workflows\u2019 is now well underway.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source: Michael Goldman, SMPTE blog<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AT A GLANCE:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing for the SMPTE blog, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smpte.org\/blog\/cloud-production-on-the-horizon-0\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Goldman<\/a> delves into the newest white paper from MovieLabs, an independent industry non-profit consortium that includes five of the major Hollywood film studios. The white paper, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/movielabs.com\/our-new-2030-vision-paper-on-software-defined-workflows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Evolution of Production Workflows \u2014 Empowering Creative Processes with Software-Defined Workflows<\/a>,\u201d is part of the group\u2019s \u201c2030 Vision\u201d initiative promoting the idea of open and interoperative software-defined workflow methodologies. It establishes new guidelines on software-defined workflows, charting a framework that allows software to understand and communicate information about specific workflows, which ultimately makes them more nimble and adaptive. The paper also presents an approach for building interoperable tools for automation in a range of areas, including asset movement, collaboration, compute and rendering orchestration, cost calculation, personnel scheduling, and project dashboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/movielabs.com\/our-new-2030-vision-paper-on-software-defined-workflows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MovieLabs.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19246\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn order to deploy workflows in the cloud that are less brittle and more easily reconfigured than today\u2019s, you need to build up toward interoperability,\u201d MovieLabs CTO Jim Helman tells Goldman. \u201cThe most foundational element of that is to realize that you can\u2019t have common APIs, common interfaces, if you don\u2019t even agree on what things are, what the data model is. So we set out to discuss how we could work out a common set of ontologies for production that would be useful to everyone.
