Yet throughout King\u2019s history-changing political career, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies often treated him as an enemy of the state. <em>MLK\/FBI<\/em>, the new documentary feature from Emmy Award-winning editor and director Sam Pollard (<em>Two Trains Runnin\u2019<\/em>), is the first film to uncover the extent of the FBI\u2019s surveillance and harassment of the civil rights icon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on newly discovered and declassified files utilizing a trove of documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and unsealed by the National Archives, as well as revelatory restored footage of King, the documentary explores the government\u2019s history of targeting Black activists and the contested meaning behind some of the country\u2019s most cherished ideals. Featuring interviews with key figures, including former FBI Director James Comey, <em>MLK\/FBI<\/em> is an astonishing and tragic story with urgent relevance today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MLK\/FBI - Official Trailer | HD | IFC Films\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Lvfxzht9KUA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>MLK\/FBI<\/em>\u2026 speaks directly to the dissonance between our popular memory of the civil rights movement and its complicated history,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/new-film-details-fbi-relentless-pursuit-dr-martin-luther-king-180976770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christopher Wilson<\/a> writes in <em>Smithsonian Magazine<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe story of the FBI\u2019s campaign against King has clear and sobering relevance today. It reminds us of the danger of a powerful, unchecked and flawed demagogue like [Herbert] Hoover using his office to impose his own views on society and to enforce them with scurrilous and lawless methods. The FBI wasn\u2019t just seeking to defame King using details from his private life. The bureau officials\u2019 rush to cast aspersions on the reverend was both strategic and ideological. The documentary shows that they believed revealing King\u2019s indiscretions would damage his \u2014 and the movement\u2019s \u2014 claim to a moral high ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2021\/01\/mlk-fbi-surveillance\/617719\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">When the FBI Spied on MLK (<em>The Atlantic<\/em>)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"720\" width=\"1280\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MLK-FBIStill4-1.jpg?resize=1280%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sam Pollard\u2019s \u201cMLK\/FBI.\u201d Cr: IFC Films\" class=\"wp-image-19319\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sam Pollard\u2019s \u201cMLK\/FBI.\u201d Cr: IFC Films<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most striking elements of <em>MLK\/FBI<\/em> is its use of archival footage interspersed with playful film clips, accompanied by voice-over interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe idea of having nobody on camera was something that I had been inspired by with a film called <em>The<\/em> <em>Black<\/em> <em>Power Mixtape 1967-1975<\/em>, which I had seen around 2011,\u201d Pollard said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentary.org\/online-feature\/mlkfbi-explores-complexities-civil-rights-icon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tracie Lewis<\/a> for <em>Documentary Magazine<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat director, a Swedish director [G\u00f6ran Olsson], had phenomenal archival footage from the \u201870s and everybody was commenting on it off-camera \u2014 Angela Davis, Harry Belafonte, and others. That had always stayed in my mind. I said to my producer on this film, Ben Hedin, that when we do this film, I want to do that. I don\u2019t want us to have anybody on camera. I want people to become immersed in the material, the archival footage, from the March on Washington to the last evening of Dr. King\u2019s life when he was in Memphis, Tennessee.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pollard was also inspired by Hollywood movies that glorified the FBI, giving editor Laura Tomaselli a list of films to mine for clips, including <em>Walk a Crooked Mile<\/em>, <em>I Was a Conman for the FBI<\/em>, <em>Big Jim McClain<\/em>, <em>The FBI Story<\/em> with Jimmy Stewart, and what Pollard calls \u201cthat seminal series on ABC in the \u201860s,\u201d <em>The FBI<\/em>, with Efrem Zimbalist Jr. \u201c[Using] old movie clips was an idea I had because I was very familiar with how the FBI had been used by these old feature films and how the FBI was part of them, creating their own myth,\u201d Pollard told Lewis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentary.org\/online-feature\/mlkfbi-explores-complexities-civil-rights-icon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018MLK\/FBI\u2019 Explores the Complexities of the Civil Rights Icon (<em>Documentary Magazine<\/em>)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MLK-FBIStill3-1.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Sam Pollard\u2019s \u201cMLK\/FBI.\u201d Cr: IFC Films\" class=\"wp-image-19320\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Sam Pollard\u2019s \u201cMLK\/FBI.\u201d Cr: IFC Films<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSam and I were both inspired by a lot of the archival-only docs,\u201d Tomaselli noted in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.provideocoalition.com\/editing-mlk-fbi-with-laura-tomaselli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kenny McMillan<\/a> for the <em>ProVideo Coalition<\/em>. \u201cThere\u2019s a great old one of King that won the Oscar called <em>A Filmed Record: From Montgomery to Memphis<\/em>, and that\u2019s like our direct predecessor, but he also really liked <em>The Black Power Mixtape<\/em>\u2026. We really felt like telling the story through archival so that it was fully immersive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working alone in her home in upstate New York throughout the pandemic, Tomaselli had more than 300 hours of archival footage from which to assemble a rough cut, much of it sourced by archivist Brian Becker. In the absence of a script or outline, David Garrow\u2019s book \u201cThe FBI and Martin Luther King Jr.\u201d became a jumping-off point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MLK\/FBI | Clip | NYFF58\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/22DG27vIakA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn terms of finding the story it was really like whittling it down on all sides,\u201d Tomaselli said to McMillan. \u201cIt was both what we had from these like really great interviews, and then Brian, our wonderful archivist, would pull something in and we would just be like, \u2018Oh my God, this has to be a thing.\u2019 You know, it was kind of coming at us from all sides, if that makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.provideocoalition.com\/editing-mlk-fbi-with-laura-tomaselli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Editing MLK\/FBI with Laura Tomaselli (<em>ProVideo Coalition<\/em>)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/MLK-FBIStill6-1.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Sam Pollard\u2019s \u201cMLK\/FBI.\u201d Cr: IFC Films\" class=\"wp-image-19321\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sam Pollard\u2019s \u201cMLK\/FBI.\u201d Cr: IFC Films<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs an editor myself, one of the things I respect about working with other editors is giving them the room to create and to shape, giving them the framework and walking away and saying, \u2018Go for it.\u2019 And I did that with Laura,\u201d Pollard said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/mlk-fbi-director-sam-pollard-editor-laura-tomaselli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caleb Hammond<\/a> for <em>MovieMaker magazine<\/em>. \u201cShe\u2019s got good, strong opinions, and we didn\u2019t always agree, but I respect editors and respect that what she was going to bring to the table was going to challenge me and advance the project, step it up \u2014 which she did constantly on every level. From the archival footage, to the clips we used from the feature films, to the interviews we had done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomaselli especially appreciated the notes Pollard provided, which came with his wealth of experience in the edit bay. \u201cThe notes Sam and Ben sent through were so either targeted and specific, or made sense to me. Ben [Hedin], our producer, is a writer, and Sam is an editor, so the notes I would get wouldn\u2019t be like, \u2018We need to make it more lively,\u2019\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing an editor and having your director be such an incredible editor like Sam, it\u2019s pretty rare,\u201d Tomaselli told Hammond. \u201cOne of the toughest parts about editing in general is finding the right materials, and Sam has an encyclopedic film knowledge from that era of those older \u2018red menace\u2019 films that we started playing with for texture in the beginning. So he was able just to give me the films that he knew immediately would work. So I wasn\u2019t watching a ton of stuff. They did not take the bait. They did not reveal the personal lives of these public figures. I mean, they didn\u2019t do it with John Kennedy, they didn\u2019t do it with others, and they didn\u2019t do it with Dr. King. I mean, somehow, he just thought, well, here\u2019s a Black man who\u2019s supposed to be this upstanding minister, and, you know, this is material that can be used to destroy him. And they didn\u2019t take the bait. The press did not take the bait.<\/strong><br><br><strong>\u201cNow here we are in 2021. It would\u2019ve been all over the paper, all over the social media, everywhere, you know? But the thing that I\u2019m amazed by is even with the idea that the press now picks up on all the scandalous stuff of people\u2019s lives, there are people whose lives have been so scandalous and so projected in the news and social media and it still hasn\u2019t had much impact. I mean, look at all the stuff that\u2019s come out about Trump, you know?
