The genre-blending film plays in turns like a dark comedy and psychological thriller that dovetails neatly with the #MeToo era. It\u2019s written and directed by Emerald Fennel, the Emmy-nominated TV writer and showrunner of <em>Killing Eve<\/em> who is also known for her roles in <em>Call The Midwife<\/em> and <em>The Crown<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Featuring pastel hues and a candy-drenched aesthetic, the visuals were captured by cinematographer <a href=\"https:\/\/benjaminkracun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Benjamin Kra\u010dun<\/a> (<em>Beast<\/em>, <em>Beats<\/em>, <em>Monsoon<\/em>) using Arri Alexa Mini cameras paired with Panavision G-series anamorphic lenses. Kra\u010dun details the production in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/britishcinematographer.co.uk\/benjamin-kracun-promising-young-woman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valentina Valentini<\/a> for <em>British Cinematographer<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to describe what this movie is,\u201d Kra\u010dun told Valentini. \u201cI sum it up as a romantic, revenge, rom-com thriller.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN - Official Trailer 2 [HD] - This Christmas\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/we5yV7Gc9rY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kra\u010dun sought to have the camera circle the action in predatory fashion, a visual idea that increases as the film\u2019s action heightens. He also wanted to include subtle visual clues about Cassie\u2019s role as an avenging angel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cA lot of the beginning of the film is visually quite static with some pretty oblique framing. Whilst the character of Cassie is in a stasis of sorts until her mission becomes clear \u2014 the morph into the avenging angel, if you will \u2014 gives her the power which she uses to start her path towards revenge. That\u2019s when the camera starts moving more and I incorporated shafts of light and very formal framing to reinforce Cassie as this biblical martyr.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To develop the color palette for the film, Kra\u010dun and Fennel compiled look books filled with references like Nicole Kidman in <em>To Die For<\/em>, Julianne Moore in Todd Haynes\u2019 <em>Safe<\/em>, and artist Cindy Sherman\u2019s <em>The Centerfolds<\/em> from 1981:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWith my DIT Chase Abrams I built a LUT that was influenced by those soft, \u201890\u2019s aesthetics to help bring out the pastels. What was in front of the camera was strong and pronounced and quite clear the colors we were going for.
