The film, directed and co-written by Darius Marder, and currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, follows heavy metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed), whose world begins to unravel as he loses his hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cacophonous, experiential <em>Sound of Metal<\/em> is a sonic and visual journey told from Ruben\u2019s point of view, with closed captioning throughout. The immersive, documentary-like film features daring and innovative sound design conceived by Marder and executed by acclaimed sound designer Nicolas Becker (<em>Gravity<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/METAL_SG_00396_rgb-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Olivia Cooke as Lou in SOUND OF METAL. Cr: Amazon Studios\" class=\"wp-image-30529\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Olivia Cooke as Lou in SOUND OF METAL. Cr: Amazon Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe that the various disciplines in film should communicate and work together,\u201d Marder says of the collaboration. \u201cNormally the editing of picture is separate from the editing of sound, which is usually part of post-production. The sound recorded while shooting is manipulated in the mix later. Nicolas and I had deep and intense conversations about integrating the sound and picture edits well before shooting began.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marder\u2019s plan was to work simultaneously with the sound mixers and film editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen (<em>A Royal Affair<\/em>, <em>Beasts of No Nation<\/em>), with input from both Becker and Abraham Marder. \u201cFrom my point of view, it was the only way this film would work,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe merging of disciplines had to be constant and never-ending. It was truly next-level, not just because of the bells and whistles we were able to come up with, but in the techniques we used.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sound of Metal \u2013 Official Trailer | Prime Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VFOrGkAvjAE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarder worked with Copenhagen-based film editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen and Paris-based sound designer Nicolas Becker to allow viewers to flit in and out of Ruben\u2019s head, using both diegetic sound and omniscient sound as the character loses his hearing and frantically searches for ways to restore it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2021\/02\/inside-sound-of-metals-immersive-world-of-silence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Piya Sinha-Roy<\/a> writes in <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe interesting thing was to make this emotional journey with Ruben and see everything with him,\u201d Nielsen told Sinha-Roy. \u201cBasically, we\u2019re never ahead of him. Don Birnam<\/a> for <em>Below-the-Line<\/em>, Nielsen said he assembled an early cut of the film from his home in Copenhagen. \u201cI had a three hours and forty-minute pass at the material, which I showed to Darius,\u201d he recounted. \u201cAfter that we worked on the structure, then we worked on finding the characters. Every pass is to find new things little by little. What do we want to the people to know about these characters?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/METAL_SG_00389_rgb-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Riz Ahmed as Ruben in SOUND OF METAL. Cr: Amazon Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cracking the film\u2019s overall structure was an evolving process, Nielsen explained to Birnam:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSomewhat late in the process we found that the key to everything was going to be the opening scene. Do we want to see Lou [Ruben\u2019s girlfriend, played by Olivia Cooke] just in bed and he is making a meal for her? It would have made her seem unimportant. We realized it was critical to portray them as equals, and so the opening scene where they are performing as a band is critical to put the audience in the mindset of \u2018these are two equals.\u2019 So now you know them instantly when you go into the film. You have two characters that are lovers, they are codependent, and they are band members. How do you tell these things? Starting with the concert, her as the lead, him as the drummer creating the beat, and then waking her up and being tender. Now you now the status of how they work as a couple, and then everything goes very fast because he quickly loses his hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.btlnews.com\/crafts\/editing\/sound-of-metal-editor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sound of Metal Editor Mikkel E.G. Nielsen on Creating an Immersive Audience Experience (Below-the-Line)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nielsen discussed his approach to editing films in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.provideocoalition.com\/art-of-the-cut-with-mikkel-e-g-nielsen-on-editing-sound-of-metal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Hullfish<\/a> for the <em>Art of the Cut<\/em> podcast. \u201cThe way I work is that I screen footage for the first two or three weeks \u2014 just screen footage and select and mark it and put it after each other,\u201d he said. \u201cThen after a couple of weeks, I kind of find the material\u2019s rhythm and the character\u2019s rhythm. You understand how the DP breathes with the director. Every film has its own rhythm. Then it\u2019s easy suddenly to do a first pass.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/METAL_SG_00076_rgb-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Riz Ahmed as Ruben in SOUND OF METAL. Cr: Amazon Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than the climactic concert scene that begins <em>Sound of Metal<\/em>, Marder had initially planned for the film to open on the couple waking up together inside their Airstream trailer, Nielsen told Hullfish:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe opening scene was actually after the concert \u2014 the Airstream. Ruben wakes up in the Airstream. Then there would be a lot of technical stuff. Ruben would wake up Lou and she would talk about music. It was to help you find the relationship. But it was difficult to understand: Are they equal? What level are they are? We had a scene with a leaf blower out in the front that would somehow irritate him and he went out aggressively and shouted at the guy with the leaf blower, which reads right and it looks right and sounds right, but it\u2019s about awakening the senses.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sound-of-metal-SOM_I_cant_hear_anything_h264_1920x1080\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/511774227?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving the concert scene to the beginning of the film allowed the audience to see that Ruben and Lou functioned as equals, Nielsen observed. \u201cThey\u2019re equal. She was the singer. He was the drummer. They\u2019re the band. They\u2019re a unit,\u201d he says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe way he wakes her up and makes her a smoothie. He wakes her up very pleasantly \u2014 very nice. Then they start dancing. Then they go on tour in a montage until you get to a concert and then suddenly he loses his hearing which was very appealing because it was doing all the right things up to that point where you suddenly know Ruben.<br><br>\u201cIt\u2019s not so much about the things you are seeing, it\u2019s about who are they as people. And you also like Lou a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/METAL_SG_00095_rgb-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Riz Ahmed as Ruben and Olivia Cooke as Lou in SOUND OF METAL. Cr: Amazon Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The editing process allows filmmakers to explore a range of storytelling options, according to Nielsen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no right or wrong in the editing room. Any stupid idea is allowed \u2014 at least it should be allowed and it should be a safe area. It should be a safe area for the director, for me, for the producer, for the actor, for anyone to say what if we did it like this and they would say, \u2018It\u2019s terrible. Nielsen on editing \u201cSound of Metal\u201d (Art of the Cut)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shuffling scenes is fairly standard in film editing, Nielsen acknowledges in an interview with <a href=\"http:\/\/thefilmexperience.net\/blog\/2021\/3\/9\/interview-bafta-nominee-mikkel-eg-nielsen-on-finding-the-bal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nathaniel R<\/a> for <em>The Film Experience<\/em>. \u201cYou do that a lot,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing is to read a book and you visualize everything yourself, but when you see a film it\u2019s told by [the succession of] images, the way characters look at each other. You don\u2019t say \u2018love\u2019 but you see a kiss. We basically just transformed the script with the actors when they added something. And then you have to find the balance, because how should the audience experience it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/METAL_SG_00137_rgb-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Riz Ahmed as Ruben in SOUND OF METAL. Cr: Amazon Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working with people from all around the world was \u201csuper interesting and rewarding,\u201d Nielsen says. \u201cNicolas who did the sound on this film is French. I edited in Copenhagen. Darius is in New York and would come here but we also mixed in Mexico and the film was shot in Boston. Cr: Amazon Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sound of Metal<\/em> combines \u201ca subjective use of the camera with the sound of what Ruben is actually hearing in that moment,\u201d to help orient the audience\u2019s understanding of what the drummer is experiencing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2021\/04\/sound-of-metal-sound-design-subjectivity-1234628886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chris O\u2019Falt<\/a> writes in <em>IndieWire<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wanted to use a language of perspective that I had never seen before,\u201d Marder told O\u2019Falt. \u201cWhen we think of point of view we think of visuals, not sound. Some films have thrown you into perspective through sound, but they are usually short moments and oftentimes they don\u2019t relate to the image you are seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an example, O\u2019Falt points to a sequence in the film where Ruben visits a pharmacy and struggles to speak with a pharmacist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo ground us in Ruben\u2019s sudden hearing loss, Marder uses a shot to signify that we are now in Ruben\u2019s perspective (see top photo, below). At the same time, he uses muffled and muted sounds, like being underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe film then cuts to a wider shot (see bottom photo, below), which tells the viewer we\u2019ve exited Ruben\u2019s perspective. Simultaneously, the sound design cuts to that of the hearing world and the pharmacist\u2019s voice becomes audible and clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Sound-of-Metal-Collage-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Riz Ahmed as Ruben in SOUND OF METAL. Cr: Amazon Studios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2021\/04\/sound-of-metal-sound-design-subjectivity-1234628886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why the \u2018Sound of Metal\u2019 Sound Design Is So Effective (IndieWire)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During production, Ahmed wore a set of specially designed earpieces inside his ears, Marder detailed in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviemaker.com\/the-sound-of-metal-director-darius-marder-sound-supervisor-nicolas-becker-riz-ahmed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Caleb Hammond<\/a> for <em>Movie Maker Magazine<\/em>. Rather than blocking sound, the earpieces emitted a white noise that prevented Ahmed from hearing his own voice, sending him \u201cinto a place of lack of control,\u201d Marder said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was a real test, in the audiologist office sequence where Ruben is doing a sound test to see where his hearing was. Riz had those hearing things in, and I had control of them on my phone. Everything Riz said, everything he could and couldn\u2019t hear, was real. It wasn\u2019t faked, just like the music in the beginning of the movie was real. It kind of dared the actors and the world to be real, and we\u2019d live and die with that. After we did that intense shoot in the office, Nicolas spent a good amount of time in that booth with Riz, mic\u2019ing his eyelids and down his throat, really getting into the minutiae of that moment with Riz\u2019s literal, physical inner body. In the episode, Nielsen discusses creating a visual and auditory language for a film, manipulating sound to awaken the senses of the audience, and waiting until late in production to start an assembly cut.
