Set from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, each film tells a different story involving London\u2019s West Indian community, whose lives, despite rampant racism and discrimination, have been shaped by their own force of will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ode to the reggae genre called \u201cLovers Rock,\u201d and to the people who found passion and freedom in its sound, <em>Lovers Rock <\/em>tells a fictional story of young love at a house party in west London in 1980. Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn makes her screen debut opposite the BAFTA 2020 Rising Star recipient Micheal Ward (<em>Top Boy<\/em>). Shaniqua Okwok (<em>Boys<\/em>), Kedar Williams-Stirling (<em>Sex Education<\/em>), Ellis George (<em>Doctor Who<\/em>), Alexander James-Blake (<em>Top Boy<\/em>) and Kadeem Ramsay (<em>Blue Story<\/em>) also star, alongside newcomers Francis Lovehall and Daniel Francis-Swaby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"720\" width=\"1081\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/DSC_6696-LR.jpg?resize=1081%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\u201cLovers Rock\u201d from director Steve McQueen\u2019s \u201cSmall Axe\u201d anthology series. Cr: Parisa Taghizedeh\/Amazon Prime Video<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cinematographer <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/shabierkirchner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shabier Kirchner<\/a> shot all five <em>Small Axe<\/em> films, employing five different formats and lighting packages for each of them. The native Antiguan, known for his work shooting films such as <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1VTFLvLtdYw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Skate Kitchen<\/em><\/a> (2018) and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/NqU6O4eYcso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Sollers Point<\/em><\/a> (2018), also shot and directed the short film <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/293621559\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Dadli<\/em><\/a> (2018), and is set to direct an adaptation of Kei Miller\u2019s novel \u201cAugustown\u201d as his feature debut. Kirchner\u2019s work on the series was lauded as the year\u2019s best cinematography by the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and also picked up a BAFTA Craft Award for Best Photography &amp; Lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his director\u2019s statement, McQueen calls Kirchner \u201cabsolutely amazing,\u201d adding, \u201cHe\u2019s from Antigua. He\u2019s a skater and of course he\u2019s a sailor, as an island man. He has a wonderful sense of balance as a DP. He\u2019s one of the most talented DPs I\u2019ve ever seen. You see, he\u2019s in there with the people. He\u2019s in there. It doesn\u2019t matter how he goes within these characters, but he goes and right into this party. You are there with him. It\u2019s beautiful. And there\u2019s no way we would\u2019ve gotten those images without him. Absolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only fictional story among the five films that comprise <em>Small Axe<\/em>, <em>Lovers Rock<\/em> was shot digitally with the ARRI Alexa Mini. The visuals are firmly rooted in a sense of place, with shots of steam-drenched walls, piping hot pots of Callaloo and curried goat, and the vantage point of a floor rug being picked up and moved to evoke a house party on a hot and humid Saturday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Small Axe - Extended Anthology Trailer | Prime Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SjFAEy-0BLk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat was on the page and in Steve\u2019s head felt incredibly sensory and we wanted to explore that,\u201d Kirchner says of his approach to filming the project. \u201cIt\u2019s funny because the day we met up to properly talk about how we wanted <em>Lovers Rock<\/em> to feel was the day after I had attended Notting Hill Carnival, and all that energy and singing, dancing and just being West Indian in a mass of other West Indians was something that very much was still present and it stayed with me throughout the filming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kirchner\u2019s festivities at Carnival became \u201ca stake in the ground\u201d for the aesthetic the filmmakers developed for <em>Lovers Rock<\/em>, he recounts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/sight-and-sound\/interviews\/shabier-kirchner-cinematographer-small-axe-steve-mcqueen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aaron E. With <em>Small Axe<\/em>, I wasn\u2019t aware going in that it would be everything, my whole DNA, conscious and unconscious. There was a direct tether. After I finished shooting, I thought I would be burnt out and exhausted. Actually I felt really full. It took a long time for me to digest all of this food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cinematographer called the opportunity to work with McQueen \u201cthe opportunity of a lifetime.\u201d Not just to work \u201cin this sphere and on that level,\u201d but also \u201cto help recognize myself, my history on screen in a way that I can continue it for others, handing this West Indian Black culture down to my peers and other people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were no attempts to \u201chomogenize the whole series in a visual way,\u201d Kirchner underscored. \u201cCinema is about language. Each is its own film, with its own identity and language. The director gave the DP the lion\u2019s share of the credit for developing the visuals of Lovers Rock, noting that entire dance sequences were given simple two-sentence descriptions. \u201cThe key was creating a real mood and atmosphere on set with the ensemble cast, and then to let his young DP rip,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2021\/05\/making-small-axe-lovers-rock-steve-mcqueen-cinematographer-shabier-kirchner-filmmaker-toolkit-podcast-episode-136-1234639269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chris O\u2019Falt<\/a> writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"200\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/playlist.megaphone.fm\/?e=PMC8283475262\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was in a lot of ways about interpreting the mode with a camera, and I think what Shabier has is a tremendous sense of balance,\u201d McQueen explained. \u201cYou can throw him in the middle of something, like we did in the protest scenes in <em>Mangrove<\/em>, and you\u2019re there. Therefore when you have someone with that ability, you can really move and go for it. We wanted colors to represent the mood. On a personal level, I looked at \u201cKhalik Allah\u201d which had some amazing nighttime photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018I love everything Robby M\u00fcller has ever done, so we talked about that because he\u2019s such a master at using color. We talked about using lighting in an expressive way that\u2019s not heavy-handed. And depending on the scene, the song or the mood, the color on the dance floor shifts throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had lilacs and pinks and then we\u2019d move into a space that had cooler spikes.
