It\u2019s kind of long but full of suspense.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So begins the odyssey of A\u2019Ziah King, aka Zola, in a stranger-than-fiction saga relayed in a now-iconic series of viral tweets. King recounted her story back in 2015 in a lengthy sequence of posts on Twitter \u2014 148 in total, preserved for eternity on <a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/WDwyW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Imagur<\/a>. King\u2019s story, a roller coaster ride of an adventure now known as \u201cThe Thotyssey,\u201d or simply <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23TheStory&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#TheStory<\/a>, quickly went viral, with King herself widely credited as the originator of the now-ubiquitous Twitter thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zola | Official Trailer HD | A24\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/24KbaKlCDDI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI made people who probably wouldn\u2019t want to hear a sex trafficking story want to be part of it, because it was entertaining,\u201d King told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/feature\/zola-tells-all-the-real-story-behind-the-greatest-stripper-saga-ever-tweeted-73048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Kushner<\/a> later that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writer-director Janicza Bravo (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pq-AHDVukoA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Lemon<\/em><\/a>) was immediately attracted to the outrageous tale of two women who hit the road to score quick cash dancing for money in Tampa, only to find their friendship tested when one of them isn\u2019t who she claims to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Z_02193-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Director Janicza Bravo, Riley Keough and Taylour Paige on the set of \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24\" class=\"wp-image-48790\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Director Janicza Bravo, Riley Keough and Taylour Paige on the set of \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s funny and unusual and uncomfortable,\u201d Bravo says of King\u2019s highly original story. \u201cIt has guts and power in the way that it unfolds. A\u2019Ziah\u2019s tweets felt like the intersection of Cardi B\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PEGccV-NOm8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bodak Yellow<\/a>\u201d and David Lynch\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/k_BybDB_phY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Blue Velvet<\/em><\/a>. The text was enigmatic, energized, raw and unfiltered. It seemed to exist on a planet that was just next to ours, somewhere larger than life and deeply saturated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comedy-thriller starts off as a free-spirited, female-centric road movie, before veering off into the seedy underbelly of sex work in Tampa, Florida. The film follows Zola (Taylour Paige), a Detroit waitress who strikes up a new friendship with a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), who invites her to join a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of \u201choeism\u201d rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, a posse of Tampa gangsters, and other unexpected adventures in this wild, see-it-to-believe-it tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zola | 5 Minute Preview | Clip | A24\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sv0X7v9eeY4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Bravo wasn\u2019t the immediate choice as the film\u2019s director, she reveals in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/zola-director-janicza-bravo-jeremy-o-harris-twitter-thread-1234964353\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mia Galuppo<\/a> for <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> \u2014 <em>Zola<\/em> was originally meant to be directed by James Franco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After learning of King\u2019s Twitter thread via a group chat with friends, Bravo asked her manager and agent to pursue the rights to the story. But without any money to put toward a bid, it was obvious she didn\u2019t have a chance. \u201cI was offering craft,\u201d Bravo told Galuppo. \u201cYou can\u2019t buy shit with craft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when Bravo heard that Franco has exited the project because of scheduling conflicts, she threw her hat in the ring, putting a call in to Killer Films, the production company that had helped secure financing for her first feature, <em>Lemon<\/em>. She met with producers repeatedly over the course of three months, trying to sell them on her vision for the film. Bravo secured the job in May 2017, with A24 \u2014 fresh off its Oscar win for <em>Moonlight<\/em> \u2014 signed on to finance and distribute the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Z_00549-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Riley Keough as Stefani and Taylour Paige as Zola in director Janicza Bravo\u2019s \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24\" class=\"wp-image-48786\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Riley Keough as Stefani and Taylour Paige as Zola in director Janicza Bravo\u2019s \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2018, eight full months after Bravo had replaced Franco as the director, the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> published a report in which the actor-director was accused of sexually inappropriate behavior by multiple women, the majority of whom were students at his Studio 4 films school. Then, months later, in June, word leaked out that Bravo was taking the helm of <em>Zola<\/em>, and a curious narrative began to form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe better story to tell was that he was accused and then a cleanup crew comes in. Like, \u2018You know how we fix it? We throw in a director. And, you know, if she\u2019s Black? Harris, basing the script on King\u2019s epic viral Twitter thread as well as Kushner\u2019s article for <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/feature\/zola-tells-all-the-real-story-behind-the-greatest-stripper-saga-ever-tweeted-73048\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zola Tells All: The Real Story Behind the Greatest Stripper Saga Ever Tweeted<\/a>.\u201d (Kushner received a story credit in the film, as did King, who also received exec producer and consulting credits.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bravo told Galuppo about the decision to bring on Harris, who is now known as the celebrated playwright of the Tony Award-winning Broadway play, <a href=\"https:\/\/slaveplaybroadway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Slave Play<\/em><\/a>, and has consulted on shows such as HBO\u2019s <em>Euphoria<\/em>, but at the time was still relatively unknown. Harris was still completing his MFA at Yale and had yet to finish his first screenplay, but Bravo knew she needed Harris \u2014 whom she describes as \u201c<em>extremely<\/em> online\u201d \u2014 to properly evoke King\u2019s voice and reach an appropriate tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Zola-04-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Taylour Paige as Zola and Riley Keough as Stefani in director Janicza Bravo\u2019s \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24\" class=\"wp-image-48781\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Taylour Paige as Zola and Riley Keough as Stefani in director Janicza Bravo\u2019s \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The duo vowed to give King the gravity and respect they knew Hollywood \u2014 and film audiences \u2014 might not necessarily provide. That included petitioning to have <em>Zola<\/em> shot on 16mm film in order to give the film the status that comes with celluloid. \u201cI wanted [King] to know that the director that was hired for this movie was going to fight for it to have a legitimacy,\u201d Bravo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was fortunate enough to shoot <em>Zola<\/em> on 16mm,\u201d Bravo says in the film\u2019s production notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is an attitude that happens when you get to shoot on film. It feels inherently important. I knew before I got it that it was how I wanted to memorialize it. I\u2019d never gotten to shoot on film. It was one of my dreams. I gave an impassioned speech that went something like: \u2018I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ll ever have this again. This is my chance. There isn\u2019t enough work made by folks who look like me about folks who look like me where the filmmaker gets that choice.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Zola-03-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Taylour Paige as Zola and Riley Keough as Stefani in director Janicza Bravo\u2019s \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24\" class=\"wp-image-48780\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Taylour Paige as Zola and Riley Keough as Stefani in director Janicza Bravo\u2019s \u201cZola.\u201d Cr: Anna Kooris\/A24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The script Harris and Bravo were handed (written by Andrew Neel and Mike Roberts) showed the duo \u201chow a lot of Hollywood saw the movie in their head,\u201d Harris said. In the first few pages of the script, Zola is seen fully nude, dancing on a pole. But in Bravo and Harris\u2019s version, there is no full female nudity in the film. \u201cIt totally makes sense if you are trying to make a 25-year-old white boy in Nebraska perk up to watch this movie,\u201d said Harris. \u201cShowing tits at the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early in the process, Harris said, \u201cI want to see dicks in this movie,\u201d but that was much easier said than done. During production, when the local casting director in Florida wasn\u2019t able to find male talent comfortable with full frontal nudity, the filmmakers went to a local nudist colony to enlist more willing participants. Zola watchfully stands by, greeting the men at the door before she sends them in to Stefani, and then we see the men from Stefani\u2019s point of view, taking in the repetition of their faces, bellies and penises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bravo spent a long time discussing how to approach this scene with her cinematographer, Australian DP Ari Wegner, she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/16\/magazine\/how-she-transformed-a-viral-twitter-thread-about-sex-work-into-a-sinister-comedy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jenna Wortham<\/a> in an interview for <em>The New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe conversation started with how nudity looks in American films. It always feels voyeuristic and like the woman who was naked wasn\u2019t in the conversation. There\u2019s always something nefarious and naughty about it,\u201d Bravo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge became how portray the labor of sex work without the use of female nudity. \u201cIt was in the original pitch,\u201d Bravo noted, describing what Wortham calls \u201ca demure sensuality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m most turned on and excited by what I can\u2019t see,\u201d Bravo told Wortham. \u201cThe shape of a breast, the shape of a buttock. A tragicomedy, if you will. When I finally got the film, people would be like, \u2018What\u2019s the movie?\u2019 I\u2019d be like, \u2018Oh, yeah, it\u2019s a dark comedy. These two girls become fast friends and go on a road trip to Florida, and one finds out she\u2019s going to be sold into sex slavery, and she\u2019s trying to get out of it.\u2019 And the person on the other end of that was always like, \u2018That\u2019s supposed to be funny?\u2019 And I\u2019d be like, \u2018No, it\u2019s so funny. It\u2019s sooo funny. I know I just said \u201csex slavery,\u201d but it\u2019s really funny.\u2019 The truth is, without the humor, I wouldn\u2019t be the right director for it. I don\u2019t have the range for it. Maybe I do, but it\u2019s not a space I\u2019d feel necessarily comfortable in. Like, to me, we\u2019ve made a period film. 2015 is a time capsule. It feels archival. I mean gosh, wasn\u2019t that just so long ago?\u201d she said in the interview:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are these certain things that were introduced to us by way of our cell phones that are now just very much a part of our life, and so I was also trying to call attention to what our relationship were to a certain visual things. Like how they\u2019ve now become embedded. We have sort of a Pavlovian relationship even to the sound cues of social media. There\u2019s a volume button later in the film, there used to be a larger one that was more period specific, but the volume button in the movie resembles more how it looked in 2016 or 2017. The one we were using initially was taken from the 2015 image, which was kind of like a like a triangle of sorts. I ended up getting rid of it because at one of the first screenings, when it came on screen, a lot of people in the audience went to their phones. And I think that our brains are just fucked. Our relationship to our phones is fucked. The other thing that happens too is that there\u2019s a Twitter whistle throughout the movie, and sometimes I\u2019ve noticed people go to silence their phones whenever they hear that. Which to me, I think that\u2019s awesome. I love that. There are plenty of digital gestures in the movie that I haven\u2019t seen used before. I haven\u2019t seen a timestamp in a film; I haven\u2019t seen a screensaver in a film; I haven\u2019t seen the lock screen used in the way that the timestamp is; I haven\u2019t seen texting used as monologue and sort of treated like a Shakespearean aside. Radha Blank (<em>The Forty-Year-Old Version<\/em>) is a recent addition to this fledgling club. I am a comedy director. This movie is a comedy. It is a dark comedy, and my lane in comedy is specifically stressful comedy. I am more right for it because of that. Being Black and also a woman is just like a bonus on top of a bonus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShould Black women get to tell these types of stories, absolutely? But I don\u2019t think we should just be throwing any stories at them. I think they should be telling stories that they feel close to. They should be telling stories that they see themselves in.
