Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen\u2019s Sandringham Estate,\u201d reads the film\u2019s synopsis. \u201cThere\u2019s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. But this year, things will be profoundly different.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Spencer<\/em> is written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steven Knight <em>(Locke, Peaky Blinders<\/em>, <em>Dirty Pretty Things)<\/em>, and shot by director of photography Claire Mathon (<em>Portrait of a Lady on Fire<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Kristen-Stewart-as-Princess-Diana_BTS-_released-9-22_courtesy-NEON_rgb.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larrain\/NEON\" class=\"wp-image-62938\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larrain\/NEON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formerly Diana Frances Spencer, the Princess of Wales captured the hearts of millions of people from all around the world following her engagement to Charles in 1981, and she remains widely mourned after her tragic and untimely death in 1997. Given the amount of publicity surrounding the couple\u2019s union and subsequent breakup \u2014 thoroughly examined in the most recent season of Netflix series <em>The Crown<\/em> \u2014 it\u2019s no surprise that Larra\u00edn would opt to narrow the focus on his subject\u2019s already very well known life for his own film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe all grew up understanding what a fairytale is, but Diana Spencer changed the paradigm, and the idealized icons that pop culture creates, forever,\u201d Larra\u00edn says of his decision to take on the project. \u201cThis is the story of a Princess who decided not to become a Queen, but chose to build her identity by herself. It\u2019s an upside-down fairytale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/player\/embed\/1050597470\/1052758216\" width=\"100%\" height=\"190\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"NPR embedded audio player\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <em>Polygon<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/reviews\/22675101\/spencer-review-kristen-stewart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Daniels<\/a> notes, Diana\u2019s return to the Queen\u2019s estate in Park House is both \u201ca heartening homecoming and an unfortunate duty, causing a wellspring of grief to affect her in varying fashions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Daniels says Larra\u00edn is \u201ctoo smart to limit <em>Spencer<\/em> to honing in on Diana\u2019s relationship with the other royals around her.\u201d Setting this story during Christmas establishes the relationship they have in the very beginning of the movie. \u201cInstead, he pulls focus by depicting how Diana is trying to protect her sons from the royals\u2019 archaic, closed-off traditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"720\" width=\"1193\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/SpencerA-LR.jpg?resize=1193%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON\" class=\"wp-image-72731\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with the \u201clooming presence\u201d of Prince Charles and Major Gregory, extreme rules, and her own internal struggles, \u201cthe mania she feels makes her Christmas holiday more of a fight for survival than a getaway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"read-more-the-kristen-stewart-movie-spencer-is-more-real-life-horror-story-than-princess-di-biopic-polygon\">READ MORE: <a href=\"\/Users\/Abby\/Downloads\/The%20Kristen%20Stewart%20movie%20Spencer%20is%20more%20real-life%20horror%20story%20than%20Princess%20Di%20biopic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Kristen Stewart movie Spencer is more real-life horror story than Princess Di biopic (Polygon)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Beauty Of Pablo Larra\u00edn\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UQLRxQBqFGg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/04\/movies\/spencer-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A.O. Scott<\/a>, in his review for <em>The New York Times<\/em>, writes that <em>Spencer<\/em> is a Christmas movie, a horror movie and a psychological thriller, as well as \u201ca love story, a melodrama of maternal devotion, an early-\u201990s fashion parade and a very British baking show.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might be tempting to view the film as a mere sidebar to hit Netflix series The Crown, Scott argues, \u201clingering over a minor episode in a vast epic and isolating a single, relatively minor character amid the pomp and pageantry of palace life,\u201d but \u201cthat is exactly wrong,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"720\" width=\"1197\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/SpencerB-LR.jpg?resize=1197%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON\" class=\"wp-image-72732\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLarra\u00edn and the screenwriter, Steven Knight, offer not a footnote but an ardent and unsparing rebuke to the mythical monarchist mumbo-jumbo that the Netflix series (to which I am entirely addicted) exists to promote. The conceit of <em>The Crown<\/em> is that, for all their flaws, defeats and compromises \u2014 or because of all that \u2014 the members of the House of Windsor are fundamentally more interesting than anybody else. Kristen can be many things; she can be very mysterious, very fragile, and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we needed. The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she approached the character is very beautiful to see. She has created something stunning and intriguing at the same time. As a filmmaker, when you have someone who can hold such a dramatic and narrative weight just with her eyes, then you have the strong lead who can deliver what we were hoping for. She is a force of nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"720\" width=\"1198\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/SpencerC-LR.jpg?resize=1198%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON\" class=\"wp-image-72733\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stewart so fully embraced the character she was portraying, Larra\u00edn told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/features\/spencer-pablo-larrain-interview-diana-b1947339.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louis Chilton<\/a> at <em>The Independent<\/em>, that he didn\u2019t direct her in the standard way. \u201cThere was a point that she had such a control of the character, she was so into it so deep\u2026 I discovered that on many occasions my best instruction was no instruction. Just stay silent and film her\u2026 You understand your own limitations as a man when you\u2019re portraying a female character.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stewart\u2019s performance was an unusually intense undertaking. While Larra\u00edn doesn\u2019t quite go to the spiritual level Stewart has described feeling on set, he absolutely acknowledges the odd sensations. \u201cShe\u2019s not impersonating her, she\u2019s not just playing her,\u201d he insists. \u201cThat\u2019s not acting. It\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"read-more-spencer-director-pablo-larrain-princess-diana-was-like-a-greek-tragic-character-the-independent\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/features\/spencer-pablo-larrain-interview-diana-b1947339.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spencer director Pablo Larra\u00edn: \u2018Princess Diana was like a Greek tragic character\u2019 (The Independent)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/SpencerD-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana and Sally Hawkins as Maggie in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON\" class=\"wp-image-72734\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana and Sally Hawkins as Maggie in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mathon found Stewart to be a natural in front of the camera, she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2021\/10\/spencer-princess-diana-claire-mathon-cinematography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yohana Desta<\/a> in an interview for <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, but, like Larra\u00edn, she couldn\u2019t quite put into words what makes her such a transfixing actor. \u201cIt\u2019s so easy and almost innate, the way she acts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During filming, which included capturing vulnerable close-ups, Mathon and her camera were often just inches away from Stewart\u2019s face. \u201cI often had the feeling that I was almost touching her,\u201d the DP said. \u201cI could feel her breathe and I was watching every single little moment, what she was feeling and the way she was moving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jwolfepr.com\/dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/SpencerE-LR.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON\" class=\"wp-image-72735\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in \u201cSpencer.\u201d Cr: Pablo Larra\u00edn\/NEON<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Desta notes that both Stewart and Diana were haunted by the \u201ccruel gaze\u201d of the paparazzi, which \u201cmade for a darkly meta experience\u201d for Mathon when the cast and crew found themselves overrun by photographers angling to get a shot of the star in character as the late royal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During production, the line between Stewart and Diana seemed to blur, according to Mathon. \u201cIt was weird how much the filming process conflated Diana and Kristen\u2026 but it might have added something to the film.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"read-more-it-evokes-ghostliness-how-spencer-and-kristen-stewart-reimagined-princess-diana-vanity-fair\">READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2021\/10\/spencer-princess-diana-claire-mathon-cinematography\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cIt Evokes Ghostliness\u201d: How Spencer and Kristen Stewart Reimagined Princess Diana (Vanity Fair)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Watch Kristen Stewart Embody Princess Diana in \u2018Spencer\u2019 | Anatomy of a Scene\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jdMWNk-yFk4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201ctentpole reference\u201d for Diana\u2019s character was Gena Rowlands in John Cassavetes\u2019s 1974 film <em>A Woman Under the Influence<\/em>. \u201cNot maybe in the detail of the character,\u201d Larra\u00edn told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2021\/oct\/29\/kristen-stewart-on-playing-diana-i-believe-in-a-lingering-energy-i-took-her-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charlotte Higgins<\/a> in an interview for <em>The Guardian<\/em>, \u201cbut in the sensibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Larra\u00edn also said he doesn\u2019t think he would have made <em>Spencer<\/em> without first having made <em>Jackie<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne thing led to another. Both women that had to deal with the press and media in different ways, both women that were linked to very powerful families married to powerful men, and they were both women that find the way to create their own story and find their identity. Wrong number! Wrong movie! We don\u2019t do that! We\u2019re just trying to work with whatever that person was and create a fable out of it. That\u2019s what I\u2019m looking for. There are movies like <em>Jackie <\/em>or <em>Spencer <\/em>where you don\u2019t know what the character wants up until the point of the movie. Some characters don\u2019t know what they want, but a situation makes them understand they are in a crisis. And as the movie evolves, they need to really understand it. So it\u2019s a more existentialist type of cinema.
