Coming of Age with \u2018My Year of Dicks\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of dicks in Annecy Cristal winner \u201cMy Year of Dicks,\u201d but very few literal penises. The hilarious and sweetly touching\u00a0animated short\u00a0film with a story told in five chapters follows 15-year-old Pam\u2019s determined quest to lose her virginity in the 1990s in a small town in Texas. Her kaleidoscopic journey populated with a cast of unsavory characters echoes coming-of-age movies like \u201cDazed and Confused\u201d and \u201cSuperbad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deftly written by author and screenwriter Pamela Ribon (\u201cMoana,\u201d \u201cRalph Breaks the Internet\u201d) and directed by Icelandic filmmaker, artist, and animator Sara Gunnarsd\u00f3ttir (\u201cThe Diary of a Teenage Girl,\u201d \u201cThe Case Against Adnan Syed\u201d), the 26-minute \u201cMy Year of Dicks\u201d is adapted from Ribon\u2019s memoir, \u201cNotes to Boys (And Other Things I Shouldn\u2019t Share in Public).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short began to take shape shortly after \u201cNotes to Boys\u201d was published, in a meeting between the writer and FX Networks. \u201cAnd once we started talking about being able to take these letters into fantasy realms, I got very intrigued,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was probably a year before I got the green light to bring on a team,\u201d Ribon continues. \u201cSo even then the whole time it was a feeling of, \u2018Well, this will never happen. This is not real.\u2019 I\u2019m making something that I haven\u2019t really seen before, and it\u2019s so personal that it felt like, \u2018Well, I\u2019m going to chase this for as long as I can.\u2019 It was always fun, like, \u2018Are we going to get away with this?\u2019\u201d (Read full story…<\/a><\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
