Jorge Guti\u00e9rrez\u2019s long-awaited animated\u00a0Netflix\u00a0limited series, \u201cMaya and the Three,\u201d about a rebellious Mesoamerican teenage princess battling the gods of the underworld, celebrates the culture on an epic scale. Told in nine parts, it boasts a dazzling array of visual styles evoking hand-drawn 2D, stop-motion, and CG animation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, \u201cMaya and the Three\u201d is proof that the Mexican animation auteur (\u201cThe Book of Life,\u201d \u201cEl Tigre\u201d) is at the top of his game. Then again, Guti\u00e9rrez is just getting started with what his wife and longtime collaborator Sandra Equihua calls the \u201cJorgeverse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been in the industry for 21 years just trying to make stuff,\u201d Guti\u00e9rrez said. \u201cI finally feel like we\u2019re being trusted to make [what we want] in a way that reflects who we are. [\u2026] We\u2019re the same people from 20 years ago. It\u2019s not like we\u2019re different in any way.
