Embracing Change: Pixar Production Designer Albert Lozano Talks \u2018LOU\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helmed by veteran animator and first-time director Dave Mullins and produced by Dana Murray, LOU<\/em> is the 14th short film from Pixar Animation Studios to receive a nomination for an Academy Award. The computer animated short is up against Glen Keane\u2019s 2D Dear Basketball<\/em>, MoPA\u2019s Garden Party<\/em>, the stop-motion Negative Space<\/em>, and Magic Light Pictures\u2019 Revolting Rhymes<\/em>. The heartwarming film, which premiered at last year\u2019s SXSW fest and played in theaters ahead of Cars 3<\/em> this past summer, tells the story of a schoolyard bully who learns a lesson from an invisible creature that lives in the school\u2019s lost and found box. It\u2019s gorgeously rendered in Pixar\u2019s signature fantastically detailed style that verges on the hyperreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albert Lozano, who served as production designer on LOU<\/em>, has been with Pixar since 1999, contributing character designs for all of the studio\u2019s features beginning with Monsters Inc.<\/em>, and continuing through 2016\u2019s Oscar-winning Inside Out<\/em> as well as the forthcoming Toy Story 4<\/em>. Tackling LOU<\/em> meant taking on a new role for Lozano, who for the first time would be overseeing the entire production, shepherding designs developed with Mullins through to the film\u2019s completion. \u201cThe way I describe the job is, you try and get things back on track if they veer off,\u201d Lozano says. \u201cBut,\u201d he adds, \u201cthat usually doesn\u2019t happen. The job gets pretty easy when you work with so many talented people. I\u2019m there just to watch over things and make Dave, the director, feel comfortable that things are looking good and will look great on screen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
