“4K resolutions certainly have their place these days, yes. For home theater, a decent 4K screen will most likely look better than a FullHD screen. But 8K and beyond? I really don’t know about that. At least not for watching a good movie. To spot a difference between 4K and 8K, you’d have to get really close to the screen.”

AT A GLANCE:

Do we really need more than 4K? Paul Ream’s remake of the famous James Bond promo video for the 2012 film Skyfall sends 007 off on a mission to save the world from the evils of 8K video. Over at CineD, Olaf von Voss discusses the video, arguing that camera manufacturers should “focus on perfecting 4K capture rather than jumping on the 8K and beyond bandwagon just because they can.”

With most consumers still viewing content in FullHD, von Voss contends that 4K hasn’t truly arrived, let alone 8K. One common argument for 8K capture is the ability to reframe any shot in post production. “But why would you want to do that?” von Voss asks, noting that to really make use of this “feature,” DPs would need to frame their shots in “strange ways” to allow for reframing later down the road, rather than framing their shots in-camera.
