Crafting the Look of ‘Zootopia 2’: Inside Disney Animation’s Color Workflow
Nearly a decade after Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Oscar-winning Zootopia introduced audiences to a sprawling, species-rich metropolis, Zootopia 2 pushes the scale even further — more characters, more environments, more detail, more shots.
This new chapter, directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard from Bush’s script, reunites Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they track a twisting mystery sparked by the arrival of a newcomer whose presence turns the city upside down.
Behind the scenes, the sequel demanded an enormous expansion of the world first introduced in 2016: more than 2,000 shots, 178 unique characters, and species ranging from rodents with half a million hairs to giraffes carrying nearly 10 million. A total of 697 artists contributed to the film, including look-development teams charged with crafting fur, hair, lighting and environments at a scale far surpassing the original feature.
